Compilations: Equine Art
By Whitney Long
A friend of mine has a wonderful painting of wild horses, the kind that you find roaming the shores of Cumberland Island, Georgia.   It is a simple painting really, just the horses against a stark background painted in bold colors.  It needs nothing else.  The strength and nobility of this magnificent animal speak volumes.  I began to look for a horse painting to call my own.  Though I have yet to claim one, in the process I came upon some wonderful equine artists.  Today’s artists have a modern interpretation on the animal.  Very different than the 19th century horse artists such as George Stubbs, Claude Vernet and Ben Marshall, these horses are depicted as alive, unbridled and personal.    With the Kentucky Derby just days away, what better time to share the work of talented artists featuring horses as their subjects?
